It’s kind of funny that I even stopped to write a full review of this watch. I’ve owned it for a long time — since 2016, actually — and it’s shown up on almost every “best of” list I’ve ever written. It’s always been in the background doing its job, a watch I grab without thinking, and because of that, I never gave it the spotlight it deserves. So let’s rectify that. The Citizen Promaster BN0150-28E is a worthy watch, deserving of the limelight, and if there’s ever been a time to give this thing a proper review, it’s now.

There’s something timeless about this watch’s design. It’s not flashy, it’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s utilitarian in the best way. This is a watch that wants to be used. In fact, the BN0150-28E is so often referred to as a “gateway drug” into the world of watches — and that’s because it nails the basics while still offering tech and heritage you can respect.
Released in 1985, the Promaster name has always been Citizen’s answer to professional-grade adventure watches. And this particular reference, with its Eco-Drive movement, remains one of the most compelling offerings under $300. No winding. No battery changes. Just wear it in the sun once in a while and you’re good to go.
Case Dimensions and Wrist Presence
Specs on paper? 44mm case, 11.5mm thick, and 200m water resistance. But don’t panic — the short lugs and compact profile help it wear like a 41mm on most wrists. I’ve worn this thing on sweaty hikes, bike rides, and beach days, and it always feels comfortable, never bulky.
You get a screw-down crown at 4 o’clock, chunky knurled bezel, and fully brushed marine-grade stainless steel construction that’s taken all the dings and dents I’ve thrown at it without flinching.
Dial and Legibility
Under a clear mineral crystal (with solid anti-reflective coating), the dial is textbook tool diver. Oversized markers, trapezoidal cardinal indices, and hands with enough lume to light up a room at 2 AM. I’ve woken up for a glass of water and the thing is still glowing like a torch on my nightstand. I’ve read reviews where professional divers say it glows so brightly it messes with your eyes during night dives — that’s not an exaggeration.
The date window sits between 4 and 5, nicely aligned with the crown. The glossy black dial is sharp, but doesn’t distract. It’s a clean, legible setup that punches way above its price.

Strap Thoughts (Because Let’s Be Honest…)
Let’s not sugarcoat it — the stock rubber strap is serviceable at best. It’s thick, stiff, and takes forever to break in. I wore it for about a week before switching it out.
Mine has lived on a gray Ritchie silicone strap for years. It’s more comfortable, fits the case better, and doesn’t cheapen the overall experience. I’ve also tried it on a few NATOs, and I’ll be honest — it’s not a great look. Something about the chunky case and curved lugs just doesn’t play well with nylon. It always looks top-heavy.
Eventually, I grabbed one of Long Island Watch’s stainless steel bracelets, and that was a game-changer. It brought a more substantial, balanced feel to the whole package. The downside? Still no on-the-fly micro-adjustment, and for the life of me, I don’t know why brands keep dropping the ball on this. If microbrands can offer a solid clasp with fine adjustment for $300, there’s no excuse.
Final Thoughts
Look — this isn’t the prettiest diver on the planet. But it’s one of the best. It’s rugged, solar-powered, reliable as hell, and priced right. If you need a tool watch that won’t quit, the Citizen Promaster BN0150-28E is it. You don’t baby it, you just wear it.
