But how do you find one that offers versatility, durability, and functionality, all while keeping your budget in check?

Well, that’s where I come in. I personally own over 40 different multi-tools and have hands-on, real-world use with almost every brand on the market. I’ve scoured the market, wielded the screwdrivers, tested the blades, and pried with the, well, pry bars, all to bring you my roundup of the best multitools under $50. I’m here to prove that cost-effectiveness doesn’t have to mean compromise. Let’s dive into a world where practicality and affordability meet – a place where the humble multitool reigns supreme.

Here Are My Top Three Picks:

SOG Power Access Delux – Best Full-Sized Multitool w/ Pilers

Victorinox Swiss Army Spartan – Best All Around EDC Multitool

Gerber Dime – Best Keychain or Minimalist EDC Multitool

Everyone has their favorites for different reasons when it comes to multitools. Here are my top three picks and why I love them.

SOG Power Acess: This is my go-to choice for the best full-sized multitool with pliers. Its robust design doesn’t shy away from heavy-duty tasks, and the pliers are some of the most durable I’ve used. The SOG doesn’t just stop at functionality; it excels in aesthetics, too, with its sleek design and high-quality materials. This Leatherman has accompanied me on many adventures, and it’s never let me down.

Victorinox Swiss Army Spartan: My pick for the best all-around EDC multitool. This is the classic Swiss army knife that we’ve all come to love, offering 12 essential functions in a compact, slim design. It’s the ideal pocket companion that’s always ready to lend a hand, whether it’s opening a bottle or tightening a loose screw. I have a soft spot for the Spartan; it’s like carrying a bit of history in my pocket.

Gerber Dime: It takes the crown for the best keychain or minimalist EDC multitool. Its compact, butterfly-open design includes an impressive array of useful tools. I particularly love the unique blade designed to cut and score plastic packaging safely – it’s saved my fingers more times than I can count. The Dime may be small, but it’s a mighty little helper that’s always there when I need it.

Each of these multitools has earned its place in my collection, proving to be reliable, practical, and worth every penny.

This little knife is something else. It’s like carrying a toolbox in my pocket, with a classic touch that never goes out of style. But let’s be honest, its compact design, while perfect for portability, does limit the range of tools it can offer.

The Spartan is true to its Swiss Army Knife heritage, combining a compact form factor with a carefully curated set of tools that have come in handy more times than I can count. It packs 12 functions, including a large and small blade, a can opener, a bottle opener, and even a corkscrew, making it the quintessential everyday carry item.

The craftsmanship of this multitool is truly praiseworthy. Each tool in the Spartan is crafted from stainless steel, ensuring durability and long-lasting sharpness. Meanwhile, the iconic red casing lends a touch of classic Victorinox charm that I’ve come to appreciate.

One feature I’ve particularly enjoyed is the slim design. It slips comfortably into a pocket, and I’ve often found myself forgetting it’s even there until I need it. Despite its compact size, the tools feel sturdy to use and manage to handle a range of tasks with ease.

  • Description: A classic Swiss army knife with 12 essential functions. Its slim design makes it an ideal pocket companion.
  • Pros: Compact size, strong reputation for quality, and versatile toolset.
  • Cons: Limited range of tools compared to some larger multitools.

SOG PowerAccess:

Best Portable Power Stations | I Highlight 15 Of The Best Power Stations Right Now

The SOG PowerAccess caught my eye with its sleek, balanced design. This tool’s aesthetics were matched by its durability – its stainless steel body held up excellently against the rigors of everyday tasks, as well as some more challenging situations in my outdoor excursions.

What truly sets the PowerAccess apart is its compound leverage system. This feature significantly amplified the grip and cutting power of the pliers, making it much easier to tackle heavy-duty tasks. I was also impressed by the selection of tools – 18 in total – tucked away within its compact frame. The full suite of tools from knives, screwdrivers, to bottle openers, catered to a variety of my daily needs.

Despite the PowerAccess’s many strengths, there were a couple of downsides. For one, I found that the tool’s compact design made some of the inner tools a bit hard to access, particularly when wearing gloves. Additionally, the lack of a locking mechanism for the tools (aside from the main blade) made usage a bit less stable than I would have liked.

  • Description: This 18-in-1 multi-tool boasts a practical and efficient design with a proprietary Compound Leverage system.
  • Pros: Great leverage makes tasks easier; it comes with a protractor and an awl.
  • Cons: A bit bulky, and the complex design might be challenging for some to utilize fully.

  • CONVENIENT SIZE: 2.75″ closed length and 4.25″ overall length; 2.2 oz weight; Backed by the Gerber Guarantee, a limited lifetime warranty

This is a nifty little gadget. It’s small, but don’t let that fool you. It packs a punch when it comes to getting jobs done. The package opener is a favorite of mine. But it’s not the most comfortable for long jobs or if you’ve got big hands like me.

First off, its compact design is one of the Dime’s strongest points. It’s impressively small, roughly the same size as a car key, yet it manages to pack in 10 different tools. This means that it takes up barely any room on my keychain, and I’ve got a whole toolkit right there in my pocket.

The range of tools provided has proven to be surprisingly useful in day-to-day life. I’ve used the handy little package opener more times than I can count, and the tweezers and bottle opener have also been great to have on hand. The mini pliers, although not suitable for heavy-duty tasks, have been handy for small repairs.

As for durability, the Dime has held up well. The stainless steel construction feels solid, and the tools still operate smoothly after several weeks of use. Plus, the butterfly opening gives a nice, balanced feel when using the pliers.

  • Description: A compact, butterfly-open multi-tool, featuring a unique blade designed to cut and score plastic packaging safely.
  • Pros: Small size, good selection of tools, including package opener.
  • Cons: Not as robust as some larger models; the small size may be uncomfortable for those with larger hands.

I’ve got to say, this one is a looker. The Boker Plus Tech-Tool City 3 pairs functionality with elegance. I particularly like the glass breaker feature – not something you see every day. But beauty comes at a price, and it’s larger than most other EDC tools.

  • Description: With 12 functions, this multi-tool has a modern look and features like a pocket clip and glass breaker.
  • Pros: Premium materials, including VG-10 blade steel, and unique features like a glass breaker.
  • Cons: Higher price point than some other options, and it’s slightly larger than other EDC options.

Talk about under the radar. This tool is so discreet that most people just think it’s a pen. But it’s much more than that, with its bottle opener, screwdriver, and scissors. It’s limited in tools, though, so it’s not your go-to for big tasks.

  • Description: This innovative multi-tool functions as a pen, but also has a bottle opener, flat screwdriver, and scissors.
  • Pros: Very discreet and practical for everyday carry; sturdy metal construction.
  • Cons: Limited number of tools compared to traditional multi-tools.

  • Description: An innovative multi-tool designed specifically for handgun maintenance and adjustments.

  • CONVENIENT SIZE: 2.5″ blade length and 3.6″ open length; 3.1 oz weight; Backed by the Gerber Guarantee, a limited lifetime warranty

As an avid collector and user of multitools, I recently added the Gerber Armbar to my collection, and I must say, it’s been quite the experience.

Firstly, the design. The Armbar has a compact yet robust design that feels solid in the hand. It comes equipped with a variety of tools, all stored in a comfortable handle, making it easy to carry. And don’t let the small size fool you; it’s remarkably sturdy.

When it comes to tools, the Armbar features a decent array, including a knife, scissors, a bottle opener, and even a hammer. The knife, in particular, impressed me. It’s sharper than many multitools I’ve used, and the lock feature ensures safety while working.

Another standout feature is the driver with a two-sided bit. This is a game-changer for those little tasks that seem to crop up out of nowhere, from tightening a loose screw on a camping trip to making quick fixes around the house.

However, the Armbar isn’t without its drawbacks. I found the scissors a bit underwhelming. While they’re functional for minor cutting tasks, they can struggle with anything more substantial. The tool selection, though practical, is a bit limited compared to some other multitools on the market.

  • Description: A sleek, multi-tool with a stainless steel blade, pliers, bit driver, pocket clip, and carabiner/bottle opener.
  • Pros: High-quality materials, lightweight design, and it’s easy to handle.
  • Cons: Limited selection of tools compared to some other models.

Kershaw Shuffle DIY:

Sale
Kershaw Shuffle 2.4-Inch 8Cr13MoV Steel Pocket Knife with Black Oxide Coating and High Tech Function, 3.5 oz., Gray
  • Multifunction pocket knife includes Phillips bit, Flathead bit, bottle opener, jump ring, lanyard hole and a single fixed position removable pocketclip
  • Drop point design adds tip strength and eliminates pitch momentum, making it a perfect tactical, hunting or survival knife noted for its durability and controllability when slicing game
  • Stainless blade made of 8CR13MOV steel for strength, hardness and edge retention
  • Liner Lock safely prevents blade from closing prematurely when titanium plate in handle slides against open blade
  • Nylon polymer reinforced Handle with glass thread has exceptional strength, stiffness, wear resistance and stability

When I first laid my eyes on the Kershaw Shuffle DIY Compact, I was intrigued by its unique form factor, and I have to admit, it’s grown on me since I began using it.

At first glance, this multitool is compact yet packs a lot of utility in its small size. The knife, which is the main tool, comes razor-sharp right out of the box. The sturdy steel construction of the blade ensures that it can handle quite a bit of abuse. The blade is also surprisingly easy to open with one hand, a feature that I’ve come to appreciate during my use.

One of the standout features of the Kershaw Shuffle is the assortment of tools in the handle. The flathead screwdriver and Phillips bit have come in handy more times than I can count. There’s also a bottle opener, which while not an everyday necessity for me, certainly adds to the tool’s utility.

On the downside, the Kershaw Shuffle is not the most ergonomic tool out there. When using the screwdriver, for instance, the knife blade protrudes out of the back of the handle, which can make it feel awkward to use. Additionally, while the small size of the tool is great for portability, it can make the tool somewhat tricky to handle for larger tasks or for those with bigger hands.

Despite these drawbacks, the Kershaw Shuffle DIY Compact has won a place in my everyday carry due to its sturdy build and versatile toolset. It’s an ideal tool for those who value compactness and simplicity in their multitools, and for the price, it offers an impressive amount of functionality. It might not be the most comfortable or comprehensive tool on the market, but for quick fixes on the go, it’s definitely a reliable companion.

Pros:

  • Compact Design: Small and easy to carry around, perfect for a pocket-sized EDC tool.
  • Versatility: Features a knife, bottle opener, and a screwdriver with interchangeable bits.
  • Sturdy Blade: The knife blade is made of durable stainless steel.
  • Cost-Effective: Provides excellent value for money given its functionality and build quality.
  • Single-Handed Operation: Allows for the one-handed operation of the blade.

Cons:

  • Ergonomics: Can be awkward to use, particularly the screwdriver with the knife blade sticking out from the back.
  • Limited Tools: Toolset is less extensive compared to other multitools.
  • Size Constraints: Compact design might not be suitable for those with larger hands or for more substantial tasks.
  • Bit Storage: Lacks onboard storage for the screwdriver bits, which could easily be misplaced.
  • Non-Locking Tools: Other than the blade, the tools do not lock into place, potentially a safety concern.

Gerber Gear Truss 17-in-1 Needle Nose Pliers Multi-tool:

  • CONVENIENT SIZE: ‎4.35″ closed length and 6.5″ open length; 8.4 oz weight; Backed by the Gerber Guarantee, a limited lifetime warranty

This tool is like a mobile toolbox. It’s equipped with full-sized tools that handle heavy-duty tasks with ease. But it’s not the most compact, so it’s not ideal if you prefer something more pocket-sized.

As a firm believer in the adage, “the right tool for the job,” I recently decided to give the Gerber Gear Truss 17-in-1 Needle Nose Pliers Multi-tool a try. Here’s my take on it.

From the get-go, the Gerber Truss impressed me with its robust, stainless steel build. It felt like a tool built to withstand the test of time, and after a few weeks of heavy use, it still looks as good as new.

The variety of tools on offer is impressive – from pliers to wire cutters and a myriad of screwdrivers. I’ve found myself reaching for this multitool for a vast array of tasks, be it around the house or during my camping trips. The spring-loaded pliers and the large handle design were particular highlights, providing both comfort and a secure grip during use.

On the flip side, the Gerber Truss is a bit bulkier than other multitools I’ve used. Pocket carry isn’t its strong suit, and the absence of a pocket clip didn’t help. I found myself mostly relying on the included sheath. Also, I was slightly disappointed to find that not all the tools locked into place, which occasionally hindered stability during use.

All in all, the Gerber Gear Truss is a reliable, sturdy multitool that’s got your back in a variety of situations. Its comprehensive toolset and robust build make it a valuable addition to any toolkit, despite its size and minor quirks.

Pros:

  • Comprehensive Toolset: With 17 tools at your disposal, including needle nose pliers, wire cutters, a variety of screwdrivers, and more, you’re equipped for a multitude of tasks.
  • Built to Last: The stainless steel construction guarantees durability, providing confidence that this multitool can handle heavy-duty use.
  • One-Hand Accessibility: The tools are designed to be accessible while the tool is in its folded or open position, allowing for easy one-handed operation.
  • Spring-Loaded Pliers: This feature makes the tool more comfortable to use over extended periods.
  • Large Handle Design: Despite the number of tools it houses, the tool is designed with a large handle for a more secure and comfortable grip.

Cons:

  • Bulky: Given its comprehensive toolset, the Truss is a bit heavier and larger compared to other multitools, making it less ideal for pocket carry.
  • No Pocket Clip: The absence of a pocket clip limits carrying options; you’d mostly have to rely on the included sheath.
  • Limited Locking Mechanism: Not all tools lock into place, potentially leading to stability issues during use.
  • No Bit Driver: Unlike some of its competitors, it doesn’t include a bit driver which can limit its versatility.
  • Tools Can Be Stiff: Some users might find the tools difficult to unfold until the tool has been broken in with use.

Having a reliable multitool in your pocket doesn’t have to break the bank. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a weekend DIY warrior, or just someone who likes to be prepared for everyday mishaps, there’s a multitool out there for you – and for under $50, no less.

Unlocking the Versatility: What Can You Do with a Multi-Tool?

The Versatile Multi-Tool

When it comes to owning a tool that can handle multiple tasks, a multi-tool is the way to go. A multi-tool is a compact and portable device that combines several useful tools into one convenient package.

It typically includes a knife blade, pliers, screwdrivers, saw blades and other attachments that can come in handy in various situations. One of the most significant advantages of owning a multi-tool is its versatility.

Whether you’re at home, at work or on an outdoor adventure, having one of these devices by your side can make life easier and more efficient. With its compact size and lightweight design, you can carry it around in your pocket or attach it to your belt with ease.

The Importance of Owning a Multi-Tool

A multi-tool is an essential item for anyone who wants to be prepared for any situation that might come their way. Whether you’re working on a DIY project at home or facing an emergency while out camping or hiking, you never know when you might need a reliable set of tools. Not only does owning a multi-tool provide practical benefits like fixing things around the house or opening packages with ease, but it also offers peace of mind knowing that you have the necessary tools readily available in case of an emergency.

In addition to this, many models these days come equipped with safety features such as locking mechanisms for the blades – which makes them safer than traditional knives. Overall, owning a multi-tool is not just about having another gadget – it’s about being prepared for anything life throws your way and making sure you have everything you need within reach.

Common Uses of a Multi-Tool

Cutting and Slicing

One of the most common uses for a multi-tool is cutting and slicing. The knife blade attachment is perfect for slicing through all sorts of food items, whether you’re in the kitchen or out in nature. If you’re camping or hiking, you can use the knife blade to chop up fruits, vegetables, or meats.

If you’re cooking at home, you can use the knife blade to slice ingredients quickly and precisely. In addition to the knife blade, many multi-tools come with a saw blade attachment as well.

This saw blade can be used for cutting through wood or plastic when a regular saw is unavailable. It’s perfect for those times when you need to make a quick cut but don’t have access to traditional cutting tools.

Tightening and Loosening Screws and Bolts

Another common use for a multi-tool is tightening and loosening screws and bolts. The screwdriver attachment is perfect for tightening loose screws on furniture or appliances around your home.

Similarly, if you have bolts that need turning but don’t have a wrench handy, you can use the pliers attachment on your multi-tool instead. Whether it’s fixing something around your home or on-the-go repairs while camping/hiking, having this feature in your pocket can be quite helpful.

Opening Bottles and Cans

Another common use for a multi-tool is opening bottles and cans. Whether it’s opening up beers at a backyard party or cracking open canned foods while camping/hiking – if your multitool comes with bottle opener/can opener attachments then it’s an added bonus.

The bottle opener attachment makes opening up beer bottles quick and easy without damaging them (or yourself!). Similarly, if you’re hungry while out adventuring into nature then opening canned food becomes easy with the can opener attachment.

There are multiple uses for a multi tool, and the above highlighted are some of the most common ones. With this powerful little tool, you have endless possibilities and solutions to some common problems that come with daily life or outdoor activities.

Niche uses of a multi-tool

The Survivalist’s Best Friend

A multi-tool is an essential item for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping or hunting. But it is especially important for survivalists, who may find themselves in emergency situations where they need to rely on the tools at hand. One of the most crucial uses of a multi-tool in survival situations is starting fires with the fire starter attachment.

The fire starter attachment enables you to create a spark that can ignite dry tinder and help start a fire. This can be a lifesaver in cold weather conditions when hypothermia may be setting in or when you need to purify water by boiling it.

Building a shelter is another key skill that can keep you alive in an emergency situation, and a multi-tool can help make this task easier. The saw blade and pliers are particularly helpful for cutting branches and constructing basic shelter.

Camping/Hiking Must-Haves

For campers and hikers, a multi-tool is like Swiss Army Knife; it has everything you need all in one place. Cutting rope with knife blade can be particularly useful when setting up your tent or tarp shelter. If you’re dealing with thicker ropes, the saw blade will come in handy for quickly cutting through them.

While out hiking, pruning branches with saw blades may be necessary when navigating through dense vegetation on trails. It’s also quite useful for trimming branches around your campsite so that they don’t pose any risk of falling on your tent or other gear while sleeping at night.

Fixing gear with screwdriver attachment can also make life easier when something breaks on your equipment while out exploring nature. Overall, using a multi-tool is not simply about having several tools combined into one; it’s about having the right tools available when needed most – whether that’s building shelter during an emergency situation or fixing a broken piece of gear while out on the trail.

Rarely known small details about a multi-tool

How

One of the best things about owning a multi-tool is its versatility. You can use it for so many different tasks, making it an essential item to bring along on any camping or hiking trip. But did you know that there are some lesser-known features to your multi-tool that can make it even more useful?

For starters, some models come equipped with a ruler etched into the side of the blade. This might not seem like a big deal, but when you’re out in the wild and need to measure something quickly, having that ruler handy can be a lifesaver.

Another surprising feature of some multi-tools is their ability to serve as a makeshift compass. Simply take a piece of metal and magnetize it by rubbing it against the blade several times in one direction.

Then suspend the magnetized piece from a piece of string or hair and watch as it aligns itself with magnetic north. This trick might not work in all situations, but if you find yourself lost without any other navigational tools, it could save your life.
